Jute rugs for natural texture and an earthy, grounded look

Jute rugs bring a warm, neutral texture that pairs naturally with wood, rattan and boho-style decor. Handwoven from plant fibre, they add visual depth to a room without competing with existing colours or patterns, and work especially well as a base layer under furniture.

Other Rug Materials

Jute rugs are handwoven from the fibres of the jute plant, a natural material also used in ropes, sacking and burlap. The fibre gives the rug its characteristic warm, tan-brown tone and slightly coarse, textured weave.

Jute has a naturally coarser texture than cotton or wool, so it can feel rougher underfoot, especially barefoot. Many people find it comfortable enough for everyday walking but prefer to layer a softer rug or slippers for bare-skin contact, such as beside a bed.

Jute isn't well suited to consistently damp or humid environments - the natural fibre can absorb moisture, leading to mildew or a musty smell over time. It performs best in dry indoor spaces like living rooms and bedrooms rather than bathrooms or humid climates without good ventilation.

Regular vacuuming on a low-suction setting removes surface dust without pulling at the fibres. For spills, blot immediately rather than rubbing, and avoid soaking the rug, since jute doesn't dry quickly and prolonged dampness can damage the fibres.

Jute handles moderate daily foot traffic well and is a popular choice for living rooms and hallways. For genuinely heavy-traffic or entryway areas exposed to dirt and moisture, a braided cotton rug typically holds up better long-term.

Jute is a natural, hypoallergenic fibre that doesn't harbour dust mites the way some synthetic pile rugs can, which makes it a reasonable choice for allergy-sensitive households. That said, like any textile, regular vacuuming is still needed to keep dust from settling into the weave.
